What protein level should be targeted when budgeting for Nitrogen on Canola? The range suggested is 18-25% and there is significant difference between Nitrogen requirement over this range. Does this protein target have any effect on Oil Content of the seed?

I prefer to N budget for canola using the lower end of the grain protein figure (18-22%). Research from Brennan et al, AJEA, 2007 and Evans et al AJEA, 2006 demonstrated the higher the N supply and the higher the grain protein %, the lower the oil% when sulphur is non-limiting.

Should we be using the BSES phosphorus test on all soils?

At present, the data available supports the use of the BSES phosphorus test in conjunction with Colwell P and PBI at 10-30cm depth and the 0-10cm Colwell P and PBI on vertosols on the Darling Downs in southern Queensland. There may be potential for a similar strategy to be used on vertosols in the south to assess if the BSES P test is useful for assessing crop phosphorus requirements. However it is important to remember that response data and critical levels established from research on the Darling Downs may not be applicable in other areas.
